A stunning cast bronze lion's head appliqué with good detail to face and mane. This roman bronze appliqué dates to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD.
This bronze lion's head appliqué, created at the height of the Roman Empire, was probably fitted to a wooden jewellery box or chest.
Condition: Lovely patina. This one has been partially cleaned, I expect because the finder hoped it was gold! There are gold examples.
Dimensions: Dia. 2.5cm.
Provenance: Ex. Property of a west Wiltshire collector, acquired in the 1970s.
Since the dawn of history, the lion has represented nobility, pride, power and strength. This bronze appliqué, created at the height of the Roman Empire, was probably fitted to a wooden jewellery box or chest. Symbolically the lion guarded the precious contents.
