125. ROMAN BRONZE LION'S HEAD APPLIQUE

A stunning cast bronze lion's head applique with good detail to face and mane. This roman bronze applique dates to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD.

Since the dawn of history, the lion has represented nobility, pride, power and strength. This bronze appliqué, created at the height of the Roman Empire, was probably fitted to a wooden jewellery box or chest. Symbolically the lion guarded the precious contents.

Condition: Lovely patina. This one has been partially cleaned, I expect because the finder hoped it was gold! There are gold examples.

Dimensions: Dia. 2.5cm

Provenance: Ex. Property of a west Wiltshire collector, acquired in the 1970s.
